Stratford Parkway Station is set to open seven months early – after official contracts were signed to build the transport hub.
Warwickshire County Council is pleased to announce that Buckingham Group Contracting has been awarded the detailed design and build contract for the new Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway Station.
Buckingham Group was appointed after submitting the most competitive proposal for the contract and demonstrating a high level of experience in the construction of new rail infrastructure. Work on site to construct the new station is due to begin later this year.
The award of this contract means that the station is now going to open seven months ahead of schedule, in May 2013. The new weekday evening and Saturday services being provided by London Midland to support the new station will also begin at the same time, with the weekday off-peak services following in December 2013.
The county council was assisted in the appointment of Buckingham Group by its experienced rail delivery team – comprising SLC Rail, Right Results Project Management and Central Programme Management – and through the support of Network Rail.
Cllr Peter Butlin, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways and Transport said: “This appointment of the contractor is giant step forward in the development of Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway Station, and will mean that we can press ahead and look to open seven months ahead of schedule.
“We are pleased to be able to offer this service to Stratford and the surrounding areas, using the funding awarded to the county council from the Department for Transport last year. We look forward to working with the experienced team from Buckingham Group over the coming months and delivering a fantastic facility for rail passengers.”
Simon Walkley, Buckingham Rail Director, said: “As a local company we are especially pleased to have this opportunity to work with Warwickshire County Council on this exciting and challenging project. We look forward to delivering a scheme which will bring many sustainable benefits to the local community.”
The new Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway Station will improve accessibility and encourage an increased use of the train for journeys that might otherwise be undertaken by car.
The station is part of the Stratford-upon-Avon Local Sustainable Transport Project which is forecast will attract 114,000 new rail trips to both the new station and the existing town station by 2024/2025. The new weekday, Saturdays and evening trains are expected to become commercially viable after three years leading to a long term service improvement for both Stratford stations.
In addition to the increased rail service, there are also a number of other improvements being introduced as part of the project, including extended opening hours for the Park and Ride as well as other sustainable travel measures such as electric car charging points.
