Have your say on Stratford Train Station footbridge

Stratford town station bridge visualisationA new footbridge is planned for Stratford’s town train station to provide better access to the platforms for everyone – and a public exhibition this month will give people the chance to express their views on the best design.

Warwickshire County Council is proposing to build a new passenger bridge with lifts at the station, to make it easier for people with mobility problems, parents with buggies, passengers with luggage and anyone else that has difficulty accessing the platforms using the current footbridge which only has steps.

The new bridge and lifts are scheduled for completion in spring 2014 and the County Council is currently in the early stages of bridge design. This month’s public exhibition, which is running from 11th – 18th February at the town station, has been organised to enable people to express their views at the start of the design process.

Cllr Peter Butlin, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Highways, said: “We really would welcome the views of local residents and other people who use the town station, particularly thoughts on the style of the bridge that will be built, so I would encourage people to come and view the public exhibition.

“The new footbridge is part of our plans to provide better access for all at the town station and will be part-funded by the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund.”

For those who are unable to attend the public exhibition, further details can also be found on the web at

www.warwickshire.gov.uk/stratfordtownstation, which also includes an online feedback form. Posters will also be displayed at Stratford Library and the Stratford District Council offices.

The County Council hopes that improvements to Stratford’s town station will further improve access to rail services in the town, which will also be given a major boost when the new Stratford Parkway train station and increased frequency train services are provided later this year. Providing a new bridge underlines the fact that the town station will remain open once the Parkway Station is complete, contrary to some local concern.

The Parkway station has also been designed to provide good access for all passengers, making journeys easier for everyone, whether they travel to the Parkway or town station.

As part of the County Council’s successful Local Sustainable Transport Fund bid, which is part funding the new Parkway Station, the Department for Transport also awarded £500,000 to improve access to rail in Stratford district by sustainable forms of transport, such as walking, cycling and bus.
